Keys to High Performance

What to really expect from a performance marketing strategy: realistic timelines, the 4 stage funnel, touchpoints, market context, and reference margins.

Published on

In the competitive world of marketing, building a solid brand and achieving highly profitable results isn't something that happens overnight. It's a long term process that requires dedication, patience, and a well defined strategy. Performance Marketing is no exception to this reality.

With that in mind, at KLIV we're completely transparent from the start, committed to working tirelessly toward your goals, while setting realistic expectations that match your brand's starting point, the resources available, and the specific characteristics of the market you operate in.

In this document, we share a detailed view of what this comprehensive process involves in order to achieve high performance results with digital advertising.

⚠️ Key warnings

  • There are no magic / standardized formulas → This is a learning process based on data and continuous optimization. Through experimentation, trial and error, you generate metrics (data) that feed both the human team and the algorithm, allowing you to identify which advertising elements are most effective for your brand: formats, messages, targeting, sales strategies, and advertising channels, among others. Generating enough information to identify those parameters usually takes up to 3 months, or even longer for brands with no prior advertising experience or with limited budget (see the minimum learning volume in how much to invest in digital advertising).
  • There are no immediate results → The customer moves through a "conversion funnel" before making a purchase decision. There are 4 stages, from Awareness, Consideration, Conversion, to Ascension, which need to be reflected in the advertising structure. This funnel can take days, weeks, or even months, varying by industry and audience profile, and depending on how established your brand is compared to your competitors. On average, a potential customer needs an estimated 7 to 20 interactions with a brand before making a purchase decision, and that number increases as the product or service becomes more expensive.
  • It doesn't depend on advertising alone → Customers interact with your brand through multiple "touchpoints" beyond the ads themselves, so to achieve effective, coherent communication, you need to work on your entire ecosystem as a whole: social media content, website, email, customer service, all the way down to elements intrinsic to your product or service. The quality of these elements makes a real difference in advertising performance.

🔽 Conversion Funnel

At KLIV, we focus on deeply understanding your business and your target audience in order to develop customized advertising strategies for each stage of the conversion funnel, the same logic developed with specific channel, creative, and metric in the consumer journey across your campaigns.

  1. Awareness stage: introduce the brand to potential customers who don't know it yet (cold audience), capturing their attention and sparking interest with valuable content that educates, entertains, or inspires.
  2. Consideration stage: they already know the brand, but are still evaluating your offer and comparing it to competitors. At this stage, it's important to provide detailed information about your product/service, differentiate yourself from competitors, and build credibility with testimonials and a portfolio.
  3. Conversion stage: they're already informed about the details of your product or service, but need that final nudge to complete the purchase. Persuade them with promotions and more direct calls to action, highlighting payment or shipping options, guarantees, or addressing common objections.
  4. Ascension stage: once people have made a purchase, the goal is to turn them into loyal customers who buy repeatedly and recommend your brand to others. This can be achieved through loyalty programs, quality customer service, and exclusive offers on complementary products, see also LTV and repeat purchase rate and lever #7 in how to lower your CAC.

✈️ The Potential Customer's Journey

It's essential to map the customer's journey from the very first interaction with your brand, in order to identify and optimize every touchpoint beyond the ads themselves. For example:

  • First, people see our awareness ads.
  • Then, they check out our social media.
  • After that, they visit our website.
  • Often, they subscribe to our newsletter, channel, or blog.
  • In some cases, they visit our physical store.
  • As they move through the funnel, they receive consideration and conversion ads.
  • ↳ They look into the features of your products.
  • ↳ They read testimonials / reviews / comments from your past customers.
  • ↳ They check out the warranty, shipping conditions, and return or exchange policies.
  • ↳ They review financing options and payment methods.
  • ↳ They explore current promotions and discounts.
  • ↳ They ask questions through your support channels, if they have doubts.
  • ↳ They compare prices, features, warranties, payment methods, shipping, and promos against your competitors.
  • ↳ They ask friends and family for advice.
  • ↳ They take some time to think it over.

→ And finally, if all goes well, they buy from us.

↻ If they're satisfied with the product and the after sales service, there's a chance they'll buy again or recommend us to friends and family, often driven by new incentives and ascension ads.

👇 Optimizing Touchpoints

  • ✓ Have an optimized website: fast, intuitive, attractively and professionally designed, built for conversion, with complete, clear, and concise information about your products/services. A simple, secure purchase process, the full breakdown is in a website optimized for conversion.
  • ✓ Publish quality organic content consistently: organic content builds community, fosters loyalty, and educates your audience about your brand. Posting regularly across your digital channels (blogs, social media, newsletters) helps keep your audience engaged and attracts new followers. This content should be valuable, relevant to your audience, and reflect your brand's values. A well executed content strategy also improves your online visibility and strengthens your search engine positioning.
  • ✓ Respond to messages quickly and effectively: customers expect fast, effective communication through their preferred channels. Use omnichannel automation tools for frequently asked questions, and make sure you have a trained team ready to handle more complex inquiries and deliver an exceptional sales experience (invest in their training). Optimize your communication profiles, like WhatsApp Business, see how to optimize lead follow up.
  • ✓ Encourage reviews and testimonials: offer discounts or gifts to encourage customers to share their reviews/testimonials, providing direct links to profiles like Google My Business or your website's review section. Respond to all of them, especially negative ones, offering solutions and showing your commitment to customer satisfaction. Highlight your best testimonials across your social profiles.
  • ✓ Protect your brand identity and reputation: your brand's communication should be consistent across every channel, always aligned with its identity (values and voice), see brand vs. performance marketing. It's also key to monitor customer objections, offering timely solutions to maintain a good reputation. Demonstrate social responsibility through active participation in social well being and environmental care.
  • ✓ Offer purchase incentives: return or exchange guarantees, financing options, payment flexibility, promotions, loyalty programs, and after sales service.
  • ✓ Improve the product or service: actively listen to customer feedback to make continuous improvements to your offer. A product or service that adapts and evolves to market needs has a better chance of success, especially if it stands out from the rest.

"A great product can be sold by a mediocre marketing campaign" , that's how John Caples summed up this idea, adding that not even the best campaign in the world can save a mediocre product in the long run.

♻️ Market Context

  • Economic conditions: high advertising performance isn't isolated from your market's economy. In a thriving economic environment, consumers tend to have more confidence and willingness to spend, which can translate into greater interest and engagement with the products or services you advertise. On the other hand, in times of economic uncertainty, consumers may become more cautious with their spending and more selective in their purchase decisions. It's therefore essential to stay aware of the economic context and adapt strategies accordingly to maximize performance, the full breakdown is in advertising campaigns during an economic downturn.
  • Time of year: it's important to recognize that how well your product sells can depend heavily on peak or seasonal periods. Some products experience significant demand spikes during certain times of the year, while at other times demand can be considerably lower. This is especially relevant for seasonal products, like toys during the holiday season or beach gear in summer. You may need to adjust your advertising and sales efforts to make the most of peak seasons (offensive strategy: + spend) and offset fluctuations in demand during low seasons (defensive strategy: promotions, launches, collaborations), the full framework is in seasonality in campaigns.

🧩 Creative diversity as targeting

Meta's algorithm, under its current version (Andromeda), has moved away from traditional manual targeting to prioritize creative content as the main audience targeting tool. Today, the algorithm works by identifying multidimensional behavioral "bubbles"; this means the ad is delivered to whoever actively responds to its message, with the content itself telling Meta which audience to target automatically.

Therefore, to maximize advertising performance, it's essential to implement strategic creative diversity. Andromeda rewards a variety of formats and angles within the same campaign: different images, videos, and carousels that target different pain points of your potential customers, at different stages of the conversion funnel.

Rather than pursuing narrow targeting, today's success lies in giving the algorithm multiple creative "hooks" that let it explore and find the segments with the highest affinity and engagement potential, then scale the ones that turn out to be most profitable. The full breakdown of this mechanism is in creative diversity as targeting.

💰 Your business's finances

At KLIV, we identify the advertising return needed to reach breakeven in your business's finances, factoring in your fixed and variable costs, and set a target above that to gradually scale it.

But the reality is that great marketing and a great product CANNOT save a bad profit margin. In other words, if you need too high a return to be profitable, you're setting the bar too high for your campaigns, and in many cases it simply isn't feasible. In other words, the lower your profit margin, the harder it will be to achieve profitability with ads.

As a reference, based on parameters drawn from multiple markets, we recommend:

  • Setting a target advertising return of a maximum of 5x to 6x, that is, 6 dollars generated for every 1 dollar invested.
  • This is equivalent to an ad spend per unit of 15% to 20% of your product/service's selling price.
  • Keeping production cost under 30% of the selling price, and being careful with fixed expenses.

In the long run, with every marketing variable well coordinated, a good product, a well positioned brand, and a favorable economic context, you can achieve returns as high as 15x, or even more.

These are general reference points, not a fixed target valid for every business , the right number for each brand depends on its actual margin. The personalized calculation, based on the net margin available for advertising, is in ROAS, MER, and CAC, and its application to monthly budget is in how much to invest in digital advertising.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take for a performance marketing campaign to show results?

Generating enough information to optimize with confidence usually takes up to 3 months, a timeframe that can extend for brands with no prior advertising experience or a limited budget.

Why aren't my results immediate if I'm already investing?

Because the customer goes through a multi stage funnel before deciding, and usually needs between 7 and 20 interactions with the brand before buying, more the more expensive the product or service is.

What is the Ascension stage and why does it matter as much as conversion?

It's the stage after the first purchase, focused on generating repeat purchases and referrals. It matters because retaining and building loyalty usually costs less than acquiring a new customer, which lowers the business's effective CAC over time.

What ROAS should I expect from my campaigns?

As a general reference across multiple markets, a target ROAS of up to 5x to 6x during the stabilization phase is reasonable, and it can grow to 15x or more in the long run once everything is aligned. The exact number depends on each business's actual margin, see the personalized calculation in ROAS, MER, and CAC.

Why can't a good ad save a bad product or a bad margin?

Because advertising can drive the initial sale, but it can't sustain a business if the product doesn't deliver on its promise or if the margin doesn't leave room to fund acquisition profitably over time.

Conclusion

High performance is the sum of several pieces working together: realistic time expectations, a campaign structure that covers the full funnel, well tended touchpoints beyond the ads, reading the market context, creative diversity, and a margin that makes profitability possible. None of these pieces alone guarantees the result, it's the combination of all of them that does.
